Adapted by Winston Groom’s comic novel, directed by Robert Zemeckis, with great flair and technical brilliance, “Forest Gump” is inventive, hillarious and it keeps pushing the nostalgic button which you can’t help but stay engrossed to. Watch the movie, which revolves around the character, Forest Gump (Tom Hanks) who is a simple-minded, good-hearted southern boy, born with an IQ in single digits.

The movie begins with Forrest Gump sitting at a bus stop, a feather falls at his feet. He picks up the feather and puts it in the book, Curious George and tells the story of his life to a woman seated next to him at the bus stop. Throught the movie, the listener at the bus stop keeps changing, each showing a different attitude to the the story, ranging from indifference to disbelief.

On his first day at school, he meets Jenny Curran, the abused, troubled, beautiful girl, whose life is followed parallely to Gump’s. Despite his near zero IQ, his ability to run like a leapord gets him into college on a football scholarship. After graduation, he enlists in the army and makes friends with Bubba. Babba convinces Gump to go into the shrimping business with him after the war is over. However, during an ambush in the Vietnam war, Bubba is killed in action. Gump ends up saving his platoon, including his platoon leader and Second Lieutant for which he is awarded.

As Gump is recovering from a shot in his buttocks, he discovers his eerie ability for ping-pong. Eventually, Gump gains popularity, reaching celebrity levels for his ping-pong abilities and lands competitively against the Chinese teams in ping-pong diplomacy. At an anti-war rally, Gump reunites with Jenny, who has turned into a counterculture hippie. Earning a fortune with his ping-pong abilities, Gump return home to buy a shrimping boat, fulfilling his promise to Bubba.

Gump propses Jeeny to marry him but Jenny declines but has sex with him to prove her love to him. She leaves with Gump having no idea of her where-abouts. On a whim, Gump decides to go for a run and elects to keep running across the country several times. He runs over three and a half years ganing popularity and turns famous. Gump reveals, in the present day, that he is waiting at the bus stop because he received a letter from Jenny, who saw him running on TV and asked him to visit her.

Gump reunites with Jenny and her son, but soon after the marriage she dies to a virus. The movie ends with father and son waiting for the school bus on Junior Forrest’s first day of school. Opening the book his son is taking to school, the white feather from the beginning of the film is caught on a breeze and drifts skyward.

Apart from a few complains, I don’t see this movie doing any harm. It is a good watch for a nice afternoon nap or for a refreshing evening. The movie uses great historical events in the service of a dubious sentimentality. It shows the American history seen through the naked eyes of a man who understand very little of what he sees.
