Watch ‘My Sister’s Keeper’, a movie that is sure to get the most stone-hearted person reach for a tissue.
An adaptation of Jodi Picoult’s novel, My Sister’s Keeper, is the story of a young girl who sues her parents for the right to make her own decision about her body.

Anna is a “designer baby”, made in a dish to be spare parts for her elder sister Kate, who suffers from leukemia. Since birth Anna has been an involuntary donor of blood, bone marrow and other bodily substances which Kate requires for her survival. But when Anna is faced with a kidney donation, she decides to put a stop to this painful servitude of hers. Anna sues her parents for medical emancipation.

The happily married couple-Sara and Brian are devastated when they hear that their daughter Kate has leukemia. Via vitro fertilization, they get Anna into the world. Anna’s body is genetically engineered to be a match for her elder sister. When Anna was born, her cord blood was donated to Kate. Later she donates blood and bone marrow to keep Kate breathing life. Anna finally hires a lawyer when she is expected to donate one of her kidney to Kate. She wants medical emancipation from her parents to gain the right to make decisions about her body herself.

Later in the movie we realize the reason for Anna initiating the lawsuit. Her sister does not want Anna to donate her kidney. Kate was tired of being sick and leading a dead life. She is tired of being a burden on Anna. Because of her, Anna too can not lead a normal life. Anna like her is constantly in and out of hospitals.

The movie is interlaced with the flashback of the relationship between the two sisters and the relationship between the siblings as a result of Kate’s health. The movie also showcases the third sibling, Jesse who feels neglected by his parents because of Kate. Jesses is Anna’s elder brother who is a troubled teen. Anna and Jesses relate to one another very well as they both feel neglected by their parents who are constantly bothered about Kate. Sara, the mother of the three is aware that she has been neglecting Anna and Jesses, but loves them equally.

The movie is remarkable and utterly exquisite in its execution. The concept of a domestic drama conflicted deeply in the crossroads of family love and wounds is seriously un-thought of till date.

Directed by Nick Cassavetes and based on Jodi Picoult’s bestseller, My Sister’s Keeper is a seamless convey of a tragic tale from multiple point of view. It tells us what impact a major illness has on each family member in a shocking and devastating way.

My Sister’s Keeper is a must watch for every parent.
